On Ordnance Survey maps, hachured markings, the small lines used to suggest slopes or earthworks, can carry a quiet air of mystery.
When a hachured feature appeared on the 1944 to 1945 revision of the six-inch OS map for Stowlin in County Galway, it looked, at least on paper, like something worth investigating. A field inspection in 1984 settled the matter: the feature was a sand quarry, sitting in undulating pastureland, a portion of which had by then been pressed into service as a silage pit. The cartographic suggestion of something ancient turned out to be a working corner of a working farm.
