Rathroe Castle, Cartronrathroe, Co. Mayo

This small tower house, likely built in the 15th or 16th century, represents the type of fortified dwelling that once dotted the Irish countryside during a turbulent period when local chiefs and landowners needed defendable homes. Though now roofless and partially ruined, the castle’s surviving walls still rise impressively from the surrounding farmland, offering a tangible connection to the area’s history.

The castle follows the typical design of Irish tower houses from this era; a rectangular structure built with thick limestone walls that would have originally stood three or four storeys high. What remains today shows evidence of narrow window openings, designed to let in light whilst maintaining defensive capabilities, and the remnants of a spiral staircase that would have connected the different floors. The ground floor, as was common, likely served as storage, with the main living quarters on the upper levels, safely removed from potential attackers. Murder holes and defensive features can still be traced in the stonework, reminding visitors that these buildings were as much fortresses as they were homes.

Local tradition connects the castle to various branches of the Burke family, Norman settlers who became thoroughly Gaelicised and controlled much of Mayo for centuries. The surrounding landscape tells its own story; the castle sits near ancient ringforts and field systems that predate it by centuries, suggesting this was a place of importance long before the tower house was constructed. Today, whilst the castle stands on private farmland, it remains a striking feature of the Mayo countryside, its weathered stones bearing witness to centuries of Irish history, from medieval clan warfare through Cromwellian conquest to the gradual abandonment that left so many of these structures as romantic ruins scattered across Ireland.
