Marked on the first and second editions of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, this single-ringed fort occupied a level area that sloped gently towards the south and west, where a stream flowed nearby. The site commanded excellent views across to Lough Swilly, making it a strategically positioned settlement for whoever built it centuries ago.

Today, you won’t find any visible trace of this ancient fortification; the land has been given over to cultivation, and the earthworks that once defined the fort have been erased by time and agriculture. Ringforts like this one were amongst the most common archaeological monuments in Ireland, typically dating from the early medieval period between 500 and 1200 AD. They served as defended farmsteads for prosperous farmers and their families, with the circular earth or stone banks providing protection for homes, livestock, and storage buildings within.

The loss of this particular fort is part of a broader pattern across Ireland, where thousands of these monuments have disappeared due to agricultural improvements and development. What remains is the historical record; the careful notation on old maps and the work of archaeological surveys that documented these sites before they were lost entirely. The Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled in 1983, provides one of the few remaining descriptions of this vanished piece of Donegal’s ancient heritage.
