Ringfort, Bushyisland, Co. Limerick

There is a particular kind of absence that shows up on old maps, and the ringfort at Bushyisland in County Limerick is one of its quieter examples.

What was once a circular enclosure roughly twenty metres across, the kind of earthwork that would have defined a family's working and domestic world in early medieval Ireland, has been entirely levelled. Stand in the pasture on the gentle north-facing slope where it once sat, and there is nothing to see. No bank, no ditch, no raised outline in the grass.

Ringforts, sometimes called raths, were the most common settlement type in early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used to protect a farmstead and its livestock. The Bushyisland example was recorded on the 1923 Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a hachured circular area, the standard cartographic shorthand for a raised or embanked feature, sitting within what was then a wooded area. By the time Denis Power compiled the site record, uploaded in August 2011, both the fort and the trees were gone. The woodland had been cleared, the earthwork levelled, and the land returned to grazing.

For anyone with a serious interest in landscape archaeology, sites like this one are not without value, even in their erasure. The 1923 OS map remains the most useful document here, showing where the feature sat before agricultural improvement removed it. The site lies in pasture, and with no surface trace evident, there is nothing to observe on the ground itself. What visiting offers, if anything, is a sense of how thoroughly a feature that endured for perhaps a thousand years can disappear within a generation of active land management. The mapped location is in County Limerick, and cross-referencing the six-inch OS sheet with the National Monuments record will help place the approximate spot on the slope.
