This defensive structure, marked simply as ‘Fort’ on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, has been largely reclaimed by nature and modern forestry practices. What once would have been a clearly visible earthwork enclosure has become an almost invisible feature in the landscape, its banks and ditches obscured by decades of tree growth.

Archaeological surveys suggest this lost fort was likely similar in both scale and construction to a better-preserved ringfort nearby, catalogued as DG052-016. These circular earthen enclosures, scattered throughout the Irish countryside, served as fortified homesteads during the early medieval period, typically housing extended families and their livestock. The defensive banks and ditches that characterised these structures provided protection whilst also demarcating social status within the community.

The site’s documentation comes from the comprehensive Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled in 1983 by Brian Lacey and his team of archaeologists. This extensive survey catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic Period through to the 17th century, preserving crucial information about sites like this Cabra Glebe ringfort that might otherwise be completely forgotten. Though the physical structure has been largely obliterated, its inclusion in both historical maps and modern archaeological records ensures this piece of Donegal’s ancient past remains part of the county’s cultural memory.
