A cashel is simply a ringfort built in stone rather than banked earth and ditch, a distinction that often reflects the local landscape as much as any deliberate choice; in the rocky terrain of County Galway, where digging into the ground quickly meets unyielding rock, stone was the practical material to hand. These enclosures were typically the farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, dating broadly from the period between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and they served as protected homesteads for a farmer and his extended family, with the circular wall keeping livestock in and opportunistic raiders out.

The townland name, An Carn Mór Thiar, translates roughly from Irish as the big western cairn, a name that hints at a landscape already marked by ancient features before any medieval farmer chose to build here.
