This circular fortification measures 17 metres across its interior and is defined by a substantial ruined wall that still stands about 0.6 metres high, though it would have been considerably taller in its heyday. The wall itself is impressively thick at 3.65 metres wide, built from local stone in the dry stone tradition that characterises many of Ireland’s ancient monuments.

The cashel’s interior remains remarkably level, though several later field boundaries now cross the site, evidence of the land’s continued agricultural use over the centuries. Local tradition holds that a souterrain, one of those mysterious underground passages or chambers common to Irish ringforts, exists somewhere within the cashel, though this hasn’t been confirmed through excavation. These subterranean features typically served as storage spaces or places of refuge and are found at many similar sites throughout Ireland.

Today the monument sits in rough grazing land that’s rocky and often waterlogged, typical of the challenging terrain that characterises much of Donegal’s landscape. From this commanding position, the cashel’s original inhabitants would have enjoyed sweeping views northward across Annagary village to the Atlantic coast beyond, a strategic location that offered both defensive advantages and proximity to marine resources. The site represents one of hundreds of similar fortifications scattered across County Donegal, each a testament to the complex social and political landscape of early medieval Ireland.
