Ringfort (Cashel), Castlebane, Castlewray, Co. Donegal

In the townland of Castlebane, County Donegal, the remains of a stone cashel sit quietly on the southern slope of a low hill, surrounded by farmland that has long since reclaimed much of the surrounding landscape.

Ringfort (Cashel), Castlebane, Castlewray, Co. Donegal

This circular fortification, measuring roughly 19 metres across internally, consists of a substantial stone wall that once stood between 2 and 3 metres thick. Though centuries of neglect have left the structure heavily overgrown with vegetation and partially collapsed, careful observation reveals sections where both the inner and outer faces of the original wall construction can still be traced amongst the tumbled stones.

The site holds particular archaeological interest due to a decorated boulder incorporated into the northern section of the wall, bearing seven distinctive cupmarks; these circular depressions carved into the stone represent a form of prehistoric rock art found throughout Ireland and Scotland. Writing in the 1880s, antiquarian Richard Kinahan documented what he believed to be a chamber and doorway in the northern wall, though no evidence of these features remains visible today. The level interior of the cashel suggests it once provided a well-planned defensive space, typical of these early medieval fortified homesteads that dotted the Irish landscape.

Today, modern field boundaries cut across and abut the ancient walls, creating a palimpsest where different eras of land use overlap. The surrounding area, whilst still used for farming, has become increasingly populated with scrub woodland, gradually obscuring this remnant of Ireland’s ringfort tradition. These cashels, the stone-built cousins of earthen ringforts, served as fortified farmsteads for prosperous families during the early medieval period, roughly from the 5th to the 12th centuries, and represent one of the most common archaeological monuments found across the Irish countryside.
