The site, known locally as the ringfort or cashel of Cluain Tsalach, once commanded views across the bay from its position amongst rocky outcrops and poor ground. Though no visible traces remain today, the local geology strongly suggests this was a stone enclosure, likely built as a cashel; a type of stone fort common throughout Ireland during the early medieval period.

These stone fortifications served as defended homesteads for farming families between roughly 500 and 1200 AD, providing protection for both people and livestock. The choice of location at Cluain Tsalach was typical for such structures, taking advantage of natural defensive features whilst maintaining sight lines across the surrounding landscape. The rocky terrain that characterised the site would have provided ready building material for the circular stone walls that once stood here.

The fort’s disappearance between the OS mapping surveys and modern times reflects a common fate for Ireland’s ringforts, many of which were dismantled for building stone or simply eroded away through centuries of abandonment. Its documentation in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal ensures that even though the physical structure has been lost, its place in the historical landscape of Mulroy Bay remains recorded, offering a glimpse into the medieval settlement patterns of this corner of Donegal.
