In the gently sloping pastures of Creevy, County Donegal, lies a modest yet intriguing archaeological feature that speaks to Ireland's ancient past.

Ringfort (Cashel), Creevy, Co. Donegal

This small circular enclosure, measuring 59 feet in internal diameter, is what remains of a ringfort or cashel; a type of fortified farmstead that once dotted the Irish landscape during the early medieval period. The site is defined by a diverted field bank and a low wall constructed from small stones, though centuries of agricultural use and the intrusion of a modern field fence have left it considerably disturbed.

What makes this particular site especially interesting is a curious feature noted by archaeologist Davies during survey work: a small gully on the western side that may represent a collapsed souterrain. These underground passages, common in Irish ringforts, served as storage spaces, refuges, or possibly held ritual significance for the families who lived within these enclosures. The presence of such a feature, even in its collapsed state, hints at the complexity of life in early medieval Ireland, where these seemingly simple farmsteads often contained sophisticated architectural elements hidden beneath the surface.

The ringfort sits on what was clearly chosen as prime agricultural land; fair pasture on a gentle ridge that would have provided good drainage and views across the surrounding countryside. This careful selection of location demonstrates the practical considerations of Ireland’s early farmers, who needed defensible positions that could also support crops and livestock. Though much altered by time and modern farming practices, the Creevy cashel remains a tangible link to the people who shaped this landscape over a millennium ago.
