In the gently sloping pastures overlooking Mulroy Bay in County Donegal, the remains of an ancient cashel fort lie partially concealed beneath centuries of accumulated earth and stone.

Ringfort (Cashel), Gortnatraw South, Co. Donegal

This circular defensive structure, measuring approximately 25 metres east to west and 27 metres north to south, represents one of the many ringforts that once dotted the Irish landscape during the early medieval period. Though modern drainage work has disturbed the site, creating a jumbled bank of stones and earth about a metre high, the original defensive wall likely still exists beneath this later accumulation.

The interior of the fort tells a story of gradual decay; a shallow scatter of loose stones across the ground suggests the collapse of internal structures, possibly dwellings or storage buildings that once stood within the protective embrace of the cashel wall. These stone cashels, as opposed to their earthen counterparts, were typically built in areas where stone was readily available and often indicated a degree of prosperity or status for their inhabitants. The fort’s strategic position, with views west across Mulroy Bay, would have provided both a defensive advantage and control over the surrounding agricultural lands.

Archaeological surveys suggest this site at Gortnatraw South forms part of a broader medieval landscape that flourished between the early Christian period and the 17th century. While time and agricultural improvements have obscured many of the fort’s original features, including the addition of a modern drain along its eastern edge, the site remains an important testament to the farming communities who once called this corner of Donegal home. These cashels served not just as fortified homesteads but as centres of agricultural production, craft working, and social organisation in rural Irish society.
