Ringfort (Cashel), Islandmore, Co. Clare

On a small island off the Clare coast sits a cashel, a type of ringfort built from dry-stone walling rather than earthen banks, that has quietly outlasted most of the world that made it.

Cashels of this kind were typically constructed during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and served as enclosed farmsteads for a single family or small community. The circular stone wall offered both a boundary and a degree of protection, enclosing a space where people lived, kept livestock, and organised the practical rhythms of daily life. That one survives on Islandmore, an island in County Clare, gives it a particular quality of separateness, the sense of a place that was already choosing a degree of remove even before the surrounding land became water, or the water expanded to cut it off more fully.

Islandmore sits within the broader landscape of County Clare, a county with a high concentration of surviving ringforts, both earthen raths and stone cashels, owing in part to the rocky terrain that made stone construction practical and, in later centuries, made large-scale agricultural clearance less thorough than elsewhere. The cashel form itself was a common architectural solution across early medieval Ireland, found in greatest density in the west and south-west, where suitable stone lay close to the surface. On an island setting, the choice to build in stone would have been shaped by what was available locally and by the particular demands of a site surrounded by water, where importing materials in bulk was not straightforward.

Because the site sits on an island, access depends on water conditions and the availability of a boat. The Clare coastline in this area is subject to tidal variation and seasonal weather, so any visit would require local knowledge and planning rather than a casual approach on foot.
