Ringfort (Cashel), Knocknakilla, Co. Cork

There is something quietly disorienting about a fortification that has been reduced to a faint curve in a field.

At Knocknakilla in County Cork, what was once a cashel, a type of ringfort enclosed by a dry-stone wall rather than an earthen bank, has been worn down to a barely legible fragment: a gently curving east-to-west wall foundation, two metres wide and only thirty centimetres high, running for eight metres through pasture. That curved line in the grass is, for now, the most visible evidence that a defended farmstead once stood here.

In 1937, a recorder named Broker noted a structure on the land of a man called Batt Kelliher: a fort of roughly a quarter of an acre, described as having a stone fence-like wall around it. That description fits comfortably within what we know of cashels generally, which were used predominantly during the early medieval period in Ireland as enclosed farmsteads for a single family or small community. The precise location of Kelliher's fort, however, has since become uncertain, and the wall fragment in the pasture is understood as a possible rather than confirmed match. More intriguing still is a possible souterrain in the interior, a souterrain being an underground passage or chamber typically cut into the bedrock or built from stone, often interpreted as a place of refuge or storage associated with ringfort settlement. Whether that feature remains identifiable on the ground is not recorded.
