Ringfort (Cashel), Lislorkan, Co. Clare

At Lislorkan in County Clare, a cashel sits quietly in the landscape, its stone walls persisting through centuries of agricultural change and rural reorganisation.

A cashel is simply a ringfort built from stone rather than earth and timber, the choice of material usually dictated by what the local ground offers readily. In the limestone-rich terrain of Clare, stone was the obvious answer, and farmers and minor lords across the early medieval period used it to enclose their homesteads, protect livestock, and signal a degree of status within their community.

Ringforts of all kinds, whether earthen raths or stone cashels, were the dominant settlement form in Ireland roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and Clare has a notably high concentration of them. The term cashel shares its root with the Latin castellum, a small fort, and the same word survives in several Irish place names. Lislorkan itself follows a familiar naming pattern, with lios, an old Irish word for an enclosure or ringfort, embedded in the townland name, suggesting that this kind of structure has shaped how people understood and described this particular patch of ground for a very long time. The doubling up, a place name that already means enclosure and a monument that is itself an enclosure, is the sort of quiet redundancy that tends to accumulate when successive generations keep recognising the same significant feature in the land.
