Though time has taken its toll on this ringfort, what remains tells a fascinating story of early Irish defensive architecture. Only the western section of the stone wall survives today, stretching for 22 metres along the hillside. The builders cleverly incorporated natural rock outcrops into the wall’s construction; a practical building technique that likely featured throughout the now lost sections of the fortification.

The surviving wall section reveals intriguing architectural details that hint at the cashel’s original layout and function. Three upright stones at the southern end appear to mark what was once an entrance, suggesting this was a carefully planned structure rather than a simple enclosure. The strategic positioning on elevated ground would have provided both defensive advantages and a clear vantage point for monitoring the surrounding territory, typical of cashels built during Ireland’s early medieval period.

Archaeological surveys conducted in the early 1980s documented this site as part of Donegal’s rich tapestry of field antiquities, which span from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century. While much of the original structure has been lost to the centuries, the remaining western wall serves as a tangible link to the people who once lived, worked, and defended this hilltop position. The site continues to offer visitors a glimpse into Ireland’s fortified past, where natural geology and human ingenuity combined to create these enduring monuments.
