Ringfort (Rath), Appletown, Co. Limerick

There is a ringfort in Appletown, County Limerick, that has essentially disappeared in plain sight.

It sits in level pasture, the kind of unremarkable agricultural ground that rolls across much of the county, and yet beneath the dense overgrowth that now covers it completely, a circular earthwork roughly 25 metres in diameter quietly persists. The enclosure is still there; it has simply been swallowed.

A rath, to use the Irish term, is a type of ringfort formed from an earthen bank, typically enclosing a domestic settlement and dating to the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD. Tens of thousands of them are scattered across the Irish countryside, making them one of the most common monument types in the country, though that familiarity has done little to protect them. The Appletown example was recorded on the 1924 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which depicted it as a circular enclosure with an external fosse, a shallow ditch running around the outside of the bank, orientated north to south. At the time of its survey by Denis Power, uploaded to the record in August 2011, the monument could no longer be seen clearly; the enclosing bank is low and the fosse shallow, and whatever remained had been overtaken by vegetation entirely.

Because the site is set in agricultural land and covered by overgrowth, there is little to observe at ground level without careful examination of the terrain beneath the growth. Anyone with an interest in locating it would do well to cross-reference the 1924 OS six-inch map with modern mapping tools, which often reveal subtle circular cropmarks or earthwork shadows in aerial imagery even when the ground-level evidence is obscured. The surrounding pasture is private land, so permission from the landowner would be required before approaching. The monument is not signposted and offers no interpretive infrastructure; what it offers instead is the quieter satisfaction of finding something that the landscape has nearly reclaimed.
