Ringfort (Rath), Ardskeagh, Co. Cork

What appears from a distance to be an ordinary rise in a North Cork pasture field turns out, on closer inspection, to be a quietly complex piece of early medieval engineering, its multiple banks and ditches still legible in the grass more than a thousand years after they were first thrown up.

The site sits roughly 220 metres north of the Garrane River, and what makes it notable is not its size but its layering: three concentric earthen banks, each separated by a shallow fosse, or ditch, enclosing a roughly circular interior that slopes gently down toward the south-southeast.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were the standard form of enclosed farmstead across early medieval Ireland, typically built between roughly 500 and 1000 AD. Most consist of a single circular bank and ditch enclosing a domestic area of perhaps half an acre. A site with two or more banks, described as bivallate or multivallate, was generally associated with higher-status occupants; the additional lines of defence, or simply of display, signalled rank as much as they provided security. At Ardskeagh, the innermost enclosure measures approximately 27.8 metres north to south and 24.5 metres east to west, enclosed by a scarp barely a quarter of a metre high. The second bank, standing 1.4 metres tall, has been absorbed into the modern field boundary system, running roughly north-northwest to south-southeast, though it remains visible as a low rise from the opposite direction. A third bank, only about 15 centimetres in internal height, survives to the north-northwest. Ordnance Survey maps charted the site across three editions, in 1842, 1903, and 1936, each capturing its form slightly differently as the surrounding landscape changed around it.
