The earthwork, roughly sixty metres in diameter, sat atop a low hillock in north Cork with open views in every direction, the kind of elevated position that early medieval farmers and landholders favoured when they built these circular enclosed settlements, known in Irish as raths. By the time the Ordnance Survey captured it on their six-inch map in 1842, the enclosure was already truncated to the north by a roadway. Later maps, from 1906 and 1937, recorded it as bivallate, meaning it had two concentric banks and ditches rather than one, a feature generally associated with higher-status sites. Much of it has since been levelled.

What survives sits to the east, where the inner earthen bank still stands to an external height of 2.4 metres, running from east-north-east to east-south-east. Between it and an outer bank lies a fosse, the ditch that would once have added a further obstacle to anyone approaching the enclosure. Stone facing is still visible on the inner bank and on the inner face of the outer bank, a detail that connects to the place-name itself. Writing in 1902, Jones recorded that Cahirmee, anciently known as Kohirvee, translates as the stone fort of Mee. That older form points to a site once defined by its masonry construction, even if most of what stands today is earthen. An aerial photograph taken in May 1977 shows the subcircular enclosure still appearing upstanding at that point, which makes the degree of subsequent deterioration all the more striking.
