Ringforts, roughly circular enclosures defined by earthen banks and ditches, were the dominant form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, used as farmsteads and occasionally as defensible residences. What makes this one worth a second look is the layering of its defences: two earthen banks separated by an intervening fosse, a further external fosse beyond that, and a low counterscarp bank to the south-west. The entrance is still legible, a causeway just over three metres wide cutting through both the inner and outer banks, though a break in the outer bank has since been stopped up with earth and branches.

When Jones wrote about the site in 1910, he recorded it under the name Duntulcha, describing it as a strong fort some 76 yards in diameter with three ramparts and two fosses. The current measurements place the circular interior at around 35 metres across, with the inner bank rising to about 2.55 metres on its exterior face, which is a reasonably substantial earthwork by any standard. The site may also be associated with a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage of the sort commonly found in connection with ringforts, typically used for storage or as a place of refuge. The interior is now heavily overgrown, and a field fence to the north has clipped part of the outer works, while sections of the external fosse to the east and south-south-east have been partially filled in over time. The bones of the original structure, however, are still very much present beneath the pasture and vegetation.
