Ringfort (Rath), Carrownahaltore, Co. Mayo

In a pasture field in Carrownahaltore, County Mayo, a slightly raised circle of ground marks the remains of an early medieval ringfort.

What makes it quietly anomalous is not drama but geometry: the earthworks are doubled, with two concentric banks enclosing a central area roughly thirty metres across, a configuration that suggests the enclosure was of some significance to whoever built and maintained it. A ringfort, or rath, was typically a farmstead of the early medieval period, its earthen banks serving less as military fortification and more as a practical boundary defining a household's space, keeping livestock in and wolves or rival neighbours out. The presence of a second bank, or bivallate arrangement, often indicates higher social status or greater wealth among the original occupants.

The site sits approximately 150 metres south-west of a separate enclosure, hinting that this part of Carrownahaltore was once a more densely organised landscape than the present open pasture suggests. The inner bank survives to a height of only 0.2 metres and is poorly preserved, while the outer bank reaches an external height of 0.4 metres. Between the two banks lies a fosse, a flat-bottomed ditch, here recorded at a depth of 1.3 metres, though it has been largely infilled and levelled along the southern to north-eastern arc. The most readable feature that remains is the entrance on the eastern side, a ramp nearly four and a half metres wide, aligned in a direction common to many ringforts across Ireland, where east-facing openings may have carried practical or symbolic significance. The site was recorded as part of D. Lavelle's archaeological survey of the Ballinrobe district, published in 1994 by the Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association.
