Ringforts
Sitting atop a low hillock in County Cork pastureland, this double-banked ringfort carries a quiet suggestion of something grander than its current, quietly eroded state might imply.
A ringfort, or rath, is an early medieval enclosed farmstead or residence, typically circular, formed by one or more earthen or stone banks with an accompanying ditch. This one is slightly more elaborate than most: two concentric banks survive, with a fosse (a defensive ditch) between them, and a possible original entrance facing east, roughly three and a half metres wide. The inner bank has been folded into the surrounding field fence system along its southern and southwestern arc, a common fate for ancient earthworks in agricultural landscapes, where farmers found ready-made boundaries in old stonework and saw no reason to fight them.
