This circular earthwork, measuring approximately 30 metres in internal diameter, stands as a testament to the defensive settlements that once dotted the Irish countryside. Though time has not been kind to the structure, with only a small section of its earthen bank still visible today, careful observation reveals the ghostly outline of what was once a complete circular enclosure.

What makes this site particularly intriguing is its proximity to another ringfort, located immediately to the east. This pairing suggests that Drumgowan may have been home to a small community or extended family group during the early medieval period, roughly between the 5th and 12th centuries. Such clustering of ringforts, known locally as raths, is not uncommon in Ireland and often indicates areas of particular agricultural value or strategic importance.

The site was documented as part of the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, a comprehensive cataloguing effort that recorded field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century. While the surviving earthworks may appear modest to the casual observer, they represent the everyday lives of Ireland’s early farming communities; people who shaped the landscape through their choice of settlement locations and defensive structures that have endured for over a millennium.
