Some sites survive by being overlooked.

This one survived only in the memory of its own disappearance. A rath, the Irish term for a roughly circular earthen enclosure typically used as a farmstead or defended homestead in early medieval Ireland, once occupied a field about 700 metres north-east of Egmont House in north Cork. By 1943, according to local information, it had been levelled. What had been a raised circular bank some 28 metres in diameter was simply ploughed away, the land returned to tillage. And yet the site did not entirely vanish.

The ringfort had been recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1937, shown as a hachured circular raised area, the standard cartographic shorthand for an earthwork of this kind. After the levelling, what remained was subtle: a slight undulation running from the south-east to the south-west, rising no more than 0.3 metres, with a faint continuation elsewhere that traces what would have been the full circuit of the bank. The fosse, the external ditch that typically accompanied a rath, left a clearer impression from the air. An aerial photograph taken in July 1989 as part of the Cork Aerial Survey and Archaeological Programme captured it as a cropmark, the kind of shadow that soil disturbance leaves in growing crops when seen from above during dry conditions. Within 50 metres to the south lies a second circular enclosure, suggesting this was not an isolated feature but part of a wider pattern of early settlement in the area.

The field gives little away at ground level now. The undulation is there if you are looking for it, but nothing announces itself. The interest is less in what can be seen than in the layering of evidence: a map made six years before demolition, a memory preserved in local knowledge, and a photograph taken more than four decades after the fact that confirmed what the soil had quietly held onto all along.
