Ringfort (Rath), Enniscoush, Co. Limerick

Somewhere in the pastureland of Enniscoush, a circular earthwork roughly thirty metres across sits buried beneath dense overgrowth, effectively invisible to anyone who does not already know to look for it.

The land around it carries on as farmland, the sheep or cattle graze, and an entire early medieval enclosure goes quietly unnoticed beneath the scrub.

A rath, or ringfort, is the most common archaeological monument type in Ireland, a circular area defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, typically used as a farmstead and place of shelter during the early medieval period. This particular example was recorded as a circular embanked enclosure on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1923, at which point its outline was still legible on the ground. The site sits at the southern edge of a break in a south-facing slope, a position that would have offered reasonable shelter and visibility to whoever occupied it. By the time Denis Power compiled the record, uploaded in August 2011, the monument had been entirely swallowed by vegetation, making even its basic form difficult to confirm without clearance work.

The site lies in pasture, which at least means the underlying earthwork has not been ploughed away, a fate that has erased a significant number of comparable sites elsewhere in Munster. The south-facing slope and the break in the terrain are the most useful navigational clues, though anyone approaching should expect to find the enclosure itself concealed rather than visible. The 1923 OS six-inch map, available through digitised archives online, remains the clearest documentary evidence of the monument's form. Access across private farmland would require the landowner's permission, and the density of the overgrowth means there is little to see at ground level without specialist survey equipment or a good deal of patience.
