Ringfort (Rath), Farranastig, Co. Cork

A field in Farranastig, County Cork, carries a name that quietly signals what lies beneath it.

Locals call it 'lios field', a reference to a lios or ringfort, the circular enclosed settlements that were built across Ireland from roughly the Iron Age through the early medieval period. Most of the time, the field gives little away; it sits as ordinary pasture, apparently unremarkable. But turn the soil, and the ring reappears. According to local knowledge, the circular form becomes clearly visible when the ground is ploughed, and the surface turns noticeably stonier along its line.

What survives above ground is modest: a low arc, curving from west to east-northeast, stretching roughly thirty metres. This kind of earthwork, a rath, was typically a raised bank enclosing a farmstead, the residence of a single family or small community during the early medieval centuries. The bank here has been reduced to little more than a gentle rise in the grass, worn down by centuries of agriculture, but the underlying archaeology has proved harder to erase entirely. The stony surface that shows up in ploughed ground suggests that the original bank or its footing remains just below the topsoil. A possible second ringfort has been identified approximately 180 metres to the northeast, which would not be unusual; such sites often occur in loose clusters, reflecting the way early medieval farming families occupied and divided a landscape over generations.
