The site consists of a raised platform encircled by what was once a defensive ditch, or fosse, now filled with centuries of accumulated silt and overgrown with rushes. This type of fortified farmstead was common throughout Ireland during the early medieval period, roughly from the 5th to 12th centuries, when they served as homes for prosperous farming families.

Several upright stones pierce through the platform’s surface, with some arranged in what appears to be a deliberate line, possibly marking the foundations of a former structure; perhaps a dwelling house or outbuilding that once stood within the protective enclosure. These stone alignments offer tantalising hints about the internal layout of the settlement, though without excavation, their exact purpose remains speculative. The presence of these stones distinguishes this particular rath from many others in the region, which typically show little surface evidence of their internal arrangements.

The immediate vicinity of the ringfort has become boggy over time, creating a marshy buffer zone around the ancient settlement. This waterlogged ground contrasts notably with the generally good quality agricultural land that characterises the broader area, suggesting that the site’s builders deliberately chose this location for its defensive advantages or perhaps for access to both wetland and dryland resources. The Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled by Brian Lacey and his team in 1983, documented this site as part of their comprehensive catalogue of the county’s archaeological heritage, preserving details of monuments that span from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century.
