Ringfort (Rath), Gooseberryhill, Co. Cork

On a west-facing slope above the Owenanore River in north Cork, there is a ringfort that exists now only on paper.

The OS six-inch maps of 1842, 1904, and 1936 each show it as a hachured circular enclosure of around forty metres in diameter, a familiar shorthand for the earthen raths that once marked the farmsteads of early medieval Ireland. By the time anyone thought to look closely at the ground itself, local knowledge confirmed what fieldwork had already failed to find: the site was levelled around 1985, leaving pasture where a double-ramparted fort had stood for well over a thousand years.

When the researcher Bowman recorded the site in 1934, it was still partially intact on land belonging to a John Flynn. The outer rampart had already gone, but the inner one survived to between three and five feet in height and was nine feet thick at its base, substantial enough to give a real sense of what a rath of this type would have felt like from within. A rath, to give the term some context, is a roughly circular earthen enclosure, its bank and ditch forming the boundary of a defended farmstead; double-ramparted examples suggest a site of some local status. Bowman also noted what may have been a souterrain in the interior, an underground stone-lined passage of the kind that served early medieval communities as storage chambers or places of refuge, though this feature has not been confirmed by excavation.

There is nothing to see at Gooseberryhill today. The coordinates still exist in the record, the slope still drops toward the river, and the maps still carry their careful hachured circle. But the earthworks themselves are gone, which makes this site less a place to visit than a quiet illustration of how quickly the physical evidence of centuries can disappear inside a single decade.
