Ringfort (Rath), Gorteen, Co. Galway

Most ringforts announce themselves with some authority, their earthen banks still rising a metre or two from the surrounding ground, their ditches still legible as long curves in the grass.

The rath at Gorteen, in County Galway, offers something rather different: a monument that has almost entirely dissolved back into the landscape, surviving more as an absence than a presence. Roughly 36 metres across on its north-to-south axis, the enclosure is subcircular in plan, but the bank that once defined its perimeter has been worn so flat that it vanishes completely between the south-west and north-west. What most visitors would walk across without a second glance.

A rath is a type of enclosed farmstead, typically of early medieval date, in which a circular area of ground was ringed by one or more earthen banks and external ditches. The ditch, known as a fosse, served both as a practical barrier and as the source of material heaped up to form the bank. At Gorteen, a possible fosse is still faintly traceable along the northern and eastern sides of the monument, curving around towards the south-east, though even this is tentative rather than certain. The western edge has been further disrupted by a field boundary that cuts directly through the monument, a common fate for low-lying earthworks once farming patterns shift and earlier boundaries lose their meaning. Set in grassland with bogland opening out to the south, the site sits in the kind of quiet, marginal terrain where early communities often chose to settle, close enough to cultivable ground but with the bog providing its own resources of fuel and raw material.

For anyone with a particular interest in the archaeology of erasure, the site is a useful study in how thoroughly an early medieval enclosure can be absorbed by centuries of agricultural activity. There is little to see in the conventional sense, but the slight swell of ground on the surviving eastern arc, and the trace of the fosse, reward a slow and patient reading of the field.
