Ringfort (Rath), Gortnalea, Co. Galway

On the south-facing slope of Slieve Dart in County Galway, a strip of nettles running just outside the south-eastern edge of an ancient earthwork is doing quiet work.

It almost certainly marks the last trace of a fosse, the defensive ditch that once encircled this early medieval ringfort, now filled in and grassed over but still feeding the soil with enough extra moisture or nutrients to sustain that telltale band of weeds. It is the kind of detail that rewards anyone paying attention, a landscape whispering what the eye alone would miss.

The ringfort itself is a subcircular rath, measuring roughly 32.5 metres east to west and 27 metres north to south, and it survives in notably good condition. A rath is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically defined by one or more earthen banks, and this one retains its stone-faced earthen bank in large part, though a number of gaps in it appear to be modern intrusions rather than original entrances. Agricultural activity has also left its mark; field walls cut across the monument at the north-west and south-east. Beyond the perimeter, local tradition recorded in Neary's 1914 survey held that a cillín, a small informal burial ground of the kind often associated with unbaptised children or marginal burials, once lay within the interior. A probable souterrain is also associated with the site. A souterrain is an underground stone-lined passage, typically constructed during the early medieval period for storage or refuge, and their presence within a ringfort is relatively common across Ireland, though rarely less than interesting as an indicator of the complexity hidden beneath what can look, at first glance, like a simple grassy mound.
