Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, with tens of thousands recorded across the island. They were typically the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval families, the bank and ditch forming a boundary that combined practical security with a statement of status. Most date to roughly the period between the sixth and tenth centuries, though some were built earlier and others continued in use well beyond that range.

The Graffy example is recorded as a rath, the earthen variety of ringfort as distinct from a cashel, which is the stone-built equivalent more commonly found in the west and north-west. Mayo contains both forms, and the presence of a rath here, rather than a cashel, is itself a small detail worth noting in a county where field walls and building foundations tend toward stone. The earthworks themselves, if reasonably well preserved, would likely be visible as a raised circular bank, possibly with traces of an outer ditch, set into farmland or rough grazing. Finding it requires knowing the townland, and approaching with the usual courtesies around private land.
