On a hillock rising from wetland in Kilbarron, County Donegal, stands the remains of an ancient stone cashel, a circular fortification that once protected an early medieval homestead.

With an internal diameter of 24 metres, this subcircular enclosure is defined by a substantial stone wall that has weathered the centuries with varying success; whilst the northern section remains well preserved, the southern portion has collapsed and suffered considerable damage. The interior space, punctuated by natural rock outcrops breaking through the surface, hints at the challenging terrain early inhabitants chose for their defensive advantage.

Archaeological surveys suggest this cashel may have been more complex than a simple ringfort, with faint traces indicating a possible outer wall connected to the inner fortification by radial sections, creating a sophisticated defensive structure. Known locally as Carrickacullen and marked on the 1900 Ordnance Survey map, the site forms part of a rich archaeological landscape that includes a nearby wedge tomb called the Giant’s Grave, located just 125 metres away. This concentration of ancient monuments speaks to the area’s long history of human occupation from prehistoric times through the medieval period.

When developers proposed building two houses near the cashel in 1999, archaeologists conducted test excavations to ensure no significant remains would be disturbed. Led by Nóra Bermingham and later Malachy Conway, the team dug several trenches and monitored trial pits across the proposed building sites. Their investigations revealed only topsoil containing occasional sherds of modern crockery and terracotta overlying natural ground, with no features or finds of archaeological significance. This careful assessment allowed the development to proceed whilst ensuring the preservation of the nearby cashel and wedge tomb, maintaining the delicate balance between modern needs and ancient heritage.
