Ringfort (Rath), Lismahane, Co. Cork

At Lismahane in County Cork, a ringfort that once stood roughly fifty metres across has been almost entirely swallowed by the plough.

Walk across the field today and you would see little more than a faint rise in the ground, the kind of irregularity that most people pass over without a second thought. Yet beneath the soil, and visible from the air in the right conditions, the geometry of an early medieval farmstead persists, refusing to disappear entirely.

A ringfort, or rath, was the standard enclosed settlement of early medieval Ireland, typically a circular area defined by one or more earthen banks with a ditch, known as a fosse, between them. This one was substantial enough to have warranted a double enclosure. When P. J. Hartnett surveyed the site in 1939, he noted two banks with an intervening fosse surviving to the south, though elsewhere only faint traces of the fosse and outer bank remained. The site appears on Ordnance Survey six-inch maps from 1842, 1903, and 1938, each time rendered as a hachured circular enclosure, meaning the cartographers were marking something still recognisable on the ground at those dates. Subsequent tillage has done what centuries had not quite managed, levelling the earthworks to near-invisibility. Aerial photography has, however, confirmed what survives below: a crop mark shows the outline of the outer bank clearly, the buried soil responding differently to drought stress or growth patterns and revealing the plan of the enclosure from above. There is also the possibility of a souterrain in the interior, one of the underground stone-lined passages that are commonly found associated with ringforts, likely used for storage or as a place of refuge.

The site is in agricultural land, and the surface offers little for the casual visitor beyond that slight rise in the terrain. The aerial crop mark, rather than anything visible at ground level, is now the clearest evidence that something substantial once stood here.
