A shadow site, revealed in an aerial photograph taken by Dr D.D.C. Pochin Mould, shows the ghostly outline of a bank and external fosse encircling a space that ground-level visitors can only partially read. This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, a type of enclosed settlement that was in common use throughout early medieval Ireland. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, but this particular example is one that the landscape has been quietly absorbing for some time.

The enclosure measures 36 metres across in both axes, a near-perfect circle. A grass-covered scarp, roughly 0.9 metres high, still traces the perimeter from east around to north-north-west, and the form was clearly legible enough to be recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, where it appeared as a hachured circular enclosure. By the time the 1937 revision was made, something had shifted: the scarp to the north-east had been replaced by a linear field boundary, absorbed into the working agricultural landscape. Today, that north-east to east section is lost entirely to overgrowth, and the interior is filled with tall grass and reeds that blend seamlessly into the surrounding field. The rath has not so much disappeared as been gradually mistaken for its surroundings.
