What survives today is merely the western section of an earthen circular platform, measuring approximately 20 to 30 metres in internal diameter. Though only partially preserved, this archaeological feature once formed part of a complete defensive enclosure that would have dominated this stretch of good agricultural land, commanding excellent views across the surrounding landscape.

The ringfort, known locally as a rath, represents one of the most common types of settlement from early medieval Ireland, typically dating between the 5th and 12th centuries AD. These circular earthworks served as fortified homesteads for farming families, providing both protection and a statement of social status within the community. The site’s strategic positioning on quality farmland suggests its inhabitants were likely prosperous farmers who chose this location for both its defensive advantages and agricultural potential.

Historical records show the enclosure was still largely intact when surveyed for the second edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map in the late 19th century. Since then, agricultural activity and natural erosion have claimed much of the structure, leaving only this western fragment as testimony to the site’s former significance. The surviving earthwork forms part of County Donegal’s rich archaeological landscape, documented comprehensively in the 1983 Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, which catalogued field antiquities spanning from the Mesolithic period through to the 17th century.
