The southern half of the monument has been effectively erased from the visible landscape, absorbed into the ordinary workings of farmland. What survives to the north is not much more legible: a degraded scarp, a partially surviving fosse, and an outer bank, all of it worn down to the point where a passing eye might read it as nothing more than a slight unevenness in the ground.

The site is a rath, the most common type of early medieval settlement monument in Ireland. A rath typically consisted of a roughly circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches, the fosse being the ditch dug to provide material for the bank. They served as farmsteads, probably housing a single family and their livestock, and were built and occupied broadly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. This particular example in Newtown, Co. Galway is subcircular in plan, measuring approximately 53.7 metres east to west and 50 metres north to south. It sits some 100 metres west of a separate enclosure, suggesting this part of the landscape was once more intensively organised than it now appears. The two monuments together hint at a settled agricultural community, though the details of who built or used either site remain unknown.

What is left now rewards patience more than spectacle. The surviving northern arc of bank and scarp is the thing to look for, modest as it is. The field wall that bisects the monument is itself a reminder of how these sites have been continuously reused and reshaped across centuries, later generations neither fully destroying nor particularly preserving what came before them.
