Ringfort (Rath), Pluckanes, Co. Cork

In a pasture on a south-facing slope in mid Cork, the ground tells a quiet story that is easy to miss.

What survives here is not a dramatic ruin but a series of low rises in the grass, the barely perceptible outline of a ringfort, or rath, that has been largely levelled over time. A rath is an early medieval enclosed farmstead, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches surrounding a circular living area, and this one at Pluckanes preserves just enough of its original form to be readable if you know what you are looking at.

The enclosure measures approximately 35 metres in diameter, a modest but not unusual size for a rath. What gives the site a degree of interest beyond its basic form is the suggestion of a second bank. To both the north and south of the inner low rise, a further rise is visible, separated from the first by a shallow depression. This may represent the remnant of an outer bank, which would make the site bivallate, meaning enclosed by two concentric earthworks rather than one. Such double-banked raths are generally associated in the archaeological literature with higher-status occupation, though the evidence here is too degraded to be certain. The site has been consistently recorded on Ordnance Survey six-inch maps from 1842 through to 1904 and 1939, depicted each time as a hachured circular enclosure, which at least confirms that its outline was still legible through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries even as the earthworks continued to diminish.
