This subcircular earthwork measures approximately 22 metres in internal diameter and is defined by an earthen bank that still rises to an impressive 2.75 metres in places, despite centuries of weathering and vegetation growth. The site shows evidence of what may have been an external fosse, or defensive ditch, though time has softened its contours considerably.

The most intriguing feature of this ringfort is its eastern side, where a 2.5-metre gap likely marks the original entrance. This opening is flanked by two substantial stones, deliberately positioned on either side; a detail that suggests careful planning and perhaps ceremonial significance. These entrance stones would have been imposing markers for anyone approaching the settlement, clearly delineating the threshold between the outside world and the protected space within.

Though now heavily overgrown, the ringfort’s strategic placement on good agricultural land speaks to its former importance as a defended homestead. These circular fortifications were typically built between the early medieval period and the 12th century, serving as the focal points of farming communities throughout Ireland. The elevated position overlooking Port Lough would have provided both defensive advantages and commanding views across the surrounding landscape, allowing the inhabitants to monitor approaches whilst managing their agricultural holdings.
