Ringfort (Rath), Scotland, Co. Galway

A small field in County Galway carries a place name that stops you short: Scotland.

Whatever the origin of that name, the ground beneath it holds something considerably older than any question of nomenclature. Sitting in low-lying grassland is a circular rath, an early medieval earthwork enclosure of the kind that once served as a farmstead or small defended residence, typically occupied between roughly the fifth and twelfth centuries. This one is about 26.5 metres in diameter, and despite the quiet indifference of the surrounding farmland, it survives in fair condition.

The earthwork is defined by two banks with a fosse between them, the fosse being the ditch dug to create the material piled up into the banks. The inner bank survives along the northern to south-eastern arc, running from north-north-east through east to south-south-east, while elsewhere the enclosing element becomes a scarp, a natural or cut slope rather than a built-up bank. A field bank, presumably of much more recent agricultural origin, cuts across the outer bank at the eastern side, the kind of casual intrusion that happened across Ireland as later landowners reorganised their fields without particular regard for what lay beneath the soil. The interior is recorded as containing a cashel or related stone feature, catalogued separately under its own reference. The site appears in Knight's survey from around 1975, which gives at least some sense of how long it has been noted by those paying attention to such things.
