Road – gravel/stone trackway – peatland, Dromteewakeen, Co. Kerry

Beneath the blanket bog of the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, a carefully laid stone road has been slowly preserved in peat for nearly three thousand years.

The trackway sits within a peat-cutting on the southern side of a low, elongated ridge called Coimin an Chosáin, a name that translates roughly as "the little common of the path", which suggests that the memory of a route here lingered in local placename tradition long after the physical road had been swallowed by the bog. Only 7.3 metres of it are currently exposed, running on a roughly north-northwest to south-southeast axis, and even that modest stretch disappears into a peat-face over a metre high at its northern end, buried beneath another 65 centimetres of accumulated peat.

What makes the structure notable is the quality of its construction. The slabs are large and carefully laid, forming a surface between 1.4 and 2 metres wide, which is consistent with the kind of deliberate engineering found in toghers, the Irish term for bog roads built to allow movement of people, livestock, or goods across otherwise impassable wetland. A radiocarbon date obtained from peat sampled directly beneath one of the slabs returned a result of 2820 plus or minus 50 years before present, placing its construction somewhere in the late Bronze Age, around the ninth or tenth century BC. At that period, the landscape of south Kerry would have supported farming communities whose movements between settlements, pastures, and resources made reliable crossing points across boggy ground genuinely important. The peat that eventually buried the trackway is, in a sense, also what kept it intact.
