Robertstown Moat in County Meath stands as a remarkably preserved example of an Anglo-Norman motte, rising from the countryside on a gentle northeast-facing slope.

This impressive earthwork takes the form of a circular mound with a flat, grass-covered summit measuring 13 metres across from north to south. The base spreads considerably wider at 36 metres in diameter, whilst the height varies from 4.2 metres on the northern side to a more commanding 7 metres on the southern approach, reflecting how the builders cleverly used the natural topography to enhance the structure’s defensive capabilities.

Built during the Anglo-Norman period, likely in the late 12th or early 13th century, this motte would have originally supported a wooden tower or keep on its summit, serving as both a defensive stronghold and a symbol of Norman authority in the region. The steep sides of the mound would have made direct assault extremely difficult, particularly when defended from above. Whilst no visible bailey remains today, careful observation suggests there may once have been a wide, shallow fosse or defensive ditch encircling the base of the mound, a common feature of such fortifications that would have provided an additional line of defence.

Today, Robertstown Moat offers visitors a tangible connection to medieval Ireland’s turbulent past. The site represents the early stages of Anglo-Norman settlement in Meath, when these foreign lords were establishing their control over the rich agricultural lands of the Irish midlands. Its survival in such good condition makes it an excellent example for understanding how these earthwork castles functioned as both military installations and administrative centres, controlling the surrounding landscape and its inhabitants during a pivotal period in Irish history.
