Rock art, Carrowreagh or Craignacally, Co. Donegal

Atop the boggy, heather-clad hills of County Donegal sits an unassuming sheet of exposed rock that holds secrets from Ireland's distant past.

This modest outcrop at Carrowreagh Or Craignacally features two distinctive cup marks carved into its weathered surface; shallow, circular depressions that were deliberately pecked into the stone thousands of years ago. The site enjoys commanding views across the landscape, with a standing stone visible just 70 metres to the northeast, suggesting this location held particular significance for the people who created these enigmatic marks.

Cup marks represent one of the most common yet mysterious forms of prehistoric rock art found across Ireland and Britain. These simple circular hollows, typically ranging from a few centimetres to over 10 centimetres in diameter, were laboriously created by repeatedly striking the rock surface with stone tools. While their exact purpose remains debated amongst archaeologists, they likely date to the Neolithic or Bronze Age periods, roughly 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. The proximity to the nearby standing stone hints at a broader ritual landscape, where various monuments and marked stones worked together to create meaningful spaces for ancient communities.

The poorly drained moorland setting, whilst challenging for modern visitors, would have been typical of many rock art sites chosen by prehistoric peoples. These elevated locations often served as boundary markers, ceremonial sites, or waypoints along ancient routes through the landscape. Today, the cup marks at Carrowreagh Or Craignacally continue to weather naturally on their exposed rock canvas, offering a tangible connection to the artistic and spiritual expressions of Ireland's early inhabitants.
