Located just east of a stone wall and a few metres west of another documented rock art site known as DON 22A, this lower outcrop features two cupmarks; simple, circular depressions carved into the stone surface. These cupmarks, whilst appearing unremarkable at first glance, represent one of humanity’s earliest forms of artistic expression and communication.

Rock art sites like this one are scattered throughout Donegal and the wider Atlantic fringe of Europe, with cupmarks being amongst the most common motifs found in these prehistoric carvings. Dating from the Neolithic period through to the Bronze Age (roughly 4000 to 500 BCE), these markings were created by repeatedly pecking at the rock surface with stone tools, a laborious process that suggests their creation held significant meaning for the communities who made them. The exact purpose of cupmarks remains enigmatic; theories range from territorial markers and astronomical alignments to ritual or ceremonial uses, though their true significance may have varied across different communities and time periods.

This particular site was documented by researcher Van Hoek in 1988 as part of a broader survey of Donegal’s rock art heritage. Whilst it may lack the elaborate spirals and complex designs found at more famous sites like Newgrange, these simple cupmarks offer an intimate connection to the people who once inhabited this landscape thousands of years ago, leaving their mark on the bedrock in a tradition that spanned millennia.
