This particular example of prehistoric art features a single cupmark, a shallow circular depression deliberately pecked into the rock surface. Located about two metres southwest of a cartouche marking on another stone known as DON 17, this isolated cupmark sits on its own grass-covered outcrop, separated from the cluster of rock art nearby.

Cupmarks like this one are amongst Ireland’s most common forms of prehistoric rock art, dating primarily from the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods. These simple circular hollows, typically ranging from 2 to 10 centimetres in diameter, were painstakingly created by repeatedly striking the rock surface with stone tools. Whilst their exact purpose remains a mystery, archaeologists have proposed various theories; some suggest they held ritual significance, perhaps used in ceremonies involving liquids, whilst others believe they may have served as territorial markers or formed part of an ancient symbolic language we’ve yet to decipher.

The Magheranaul cupmark was documented by researcher Van Hoek in 1987 as part of a comprehensive survey of Donegal’s rock art. Though modest compared to the elaborate cup and ring marks found elsewhere in Ireland and Britain, this solitary marking represents an important piece of the archaeological puzzle. Its isolation from the main concentration of rock art at the site makes it particularly intriguing, raising questions about whether it served a different purpose or was created at a different time from its neighbours.
