Located just east of an ancient field wall and southwest of a standing stone, this large isolated outcrop features prehistoric rock art that has weathered millennia of Irish winters. The smooth, fractured surface slopes gently eastward at about 13 degrees, providing a natural canvas for our ancestors’ mysterious markings.

The carvings themselves tell a story we can only guess at. The centrepiece is a large cup mark surrounded by five concentric rings, though the outermost rings have been broken where a crack runs through the stone. Nearby, another prominent feature catches the eye: a deep cup marking encircled by a single ring, cut with particular emphasis into the rock face. Scattered across the surface are at least ten additional single cup marks, their purposes lost to time but their presence still clearly visible to those who know where to look.

First documented by researcher Van Hoek in 1988, these petroglyphs form part of a wider archaeological landscape in this corner of Donegal. The site, catalogued as part of the area’s prehistoric monuments, sits in relation to other ancient features including the nearby standing stone and field boundaries. While the exact meaning and function of these cup and ring marks remain debated amongst archaeologists; whether they served as territorial markers, held ritual significance, or mapped celestial movements; they stand as enduring evidence of human presence and creativity in prehistoric Ireland.
