In the late 19th century, antiquarian Kinahan documented a remarkable collection of prehistoric rock art near the old shoreline of Lough Swilly in County Donegal.

The most prominent feature was the Giants Rock, a large stone bearing seven cupmarks; shallow, circular depressions carved into the rock surface by prehistoric peoples. These cupmarks were arranged in two triangular patterns with a single outlier, suggesting deliberate placement rather than random marking. About a hundred yards to the east stood another substantial flat stone known locally as the Giants Grave, which displayed two cupmarks of its own.

The surrounding area yielded additional examples of this ancient art form. Another rock surface nearby featured two or more cupmarks, whilst approximately fifty yards south, a smaller stone bore a single cupmark. These prehistoric markings, typically dating from the Neolithic to Bronze Age periods, represent some of Ireland’s earliest artistic expressions and may have held ritual, territorial, or astronomical significance for the communities that created them.

Unfortunately, these archaeological treasures have since vanished from the landscape. When Kinahan recorded them between 1879 and 1888, the stones sat in low-lying scrubland close to Lough Swilly’s original shoreline. However, subsequent land reclamation projects have completely transformed the area, and modern surveys have failed to relocate any of these cupmarked stones. Their disappearance serves as a poignant reminder of how easily archaeological sites can be lost to development, making historical records like Kinahan’s invaluable for understanding Ireland’s prehistoric heritage.
