Rock art, Trimragh, Co. Donegal
In the late 19th century, antiquarian Kinahan documented a fascinating collection of prehistoric rock art near the old Lough Swilly shoreline in County Donegal.

The centrepiece of this ancient gallery was the Giants Rock, a substantial stone bearing seven cupmarks; small circular depressions carved into the rock surface. These weren’t randomly placed; two sets formed triangular patterns, with a single cupmark standing apart from the geometric arrangements. The first edition Ordnance Survey 6-inch map considered these markings significant enough to warrant inclusion, highlighting their importance to Victorian archaeologists.
The surrounding landscape held additional examples of this prehistoric art form. About one hundred yards east of the Giants Rock stood another large flat stone, rather dramatically named the Giants Grave, which featured two cupmarks. The area seemed to have been a focus for this type of activity, with further examples scattered nearby; another rock surface bore two or more cupmarks, whilst a smaller stone roughly fifty yards to the south displayed a single depression. These cupmarked stones, typically dating from the Neolithic to Bronze Age periods, represent some of Ireland’s earliest artistic expressions and may have held ritual or territorial significance for the communities who created them.
Unfortunately, modern attempts to relocate these archaeological treasures have proved fruitless. The stones once sat in low-lying scrubland close to the historic Lough Swilly shoreline, but extensive land reclamation has completely transformed the area. What was once marginal coastal land has been reshaped for agricultural or development purposes, and in the process, these tangible links to Ireland’s prehistoric past have been lost. The documentation from the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal, compiled in 1983, now serves as the primary record of these vanished monuments, preserving at least the memory of what once marked this Donegal landscape.
