The castle’s remains were still visible in the 19th century when antiquarian John O’Donovan documented what he described as fragmentary wall remains; a section some 12 metres long and 3.5 metres high that represented the last standing portion of what was once a substantial fortification.

Historical records provide glimpses of the castle’s past, particularly through the Civil Survey of 1654-6, which noted that “upon the said lands standeth the Walls of an old Castle & noe other buildings”. By 1640, the property belonged to the Countess of Ormond, recorded as an English Protestant landowner, suggesting the castle had already fallen into disuse by the mid-17th century. The survey’s emphasis on there being no other buildings indicates the site had been abandoned as a residence, with only the skeletal remains of the castle walls still standing as a monument to its former importance.

The castle’s strategic placement on elevated ground was typical of Anglo-Norman and later medieval fortifications in Ireland, chosen for defensive advantages and territorial control. Though the physical structure has now completely disappeared from view, the site remains catalogued in archaeological inventories, preserving its place in the historical landscape of North Tipperary. The location continues to be of archaeological interest, even if modern visitors must rely on imagination to conjure the walls that once dominated this rural Irish hillside.
