The site sits on a gentle slope below Brusselstown Ring, a complex of prehistoric monuments that includes multiple ringforts. When the Ordnance Survey mapped this area in 1838, they recorded a ‘Castle in ruins’ here, depicting it as an oblong structure roughly 30 metres long and 8 metres wide.

Today, visitors to Castlequarter will find little evidence of the medieval stronghold that gave the townland its name. The castle’s footprint has been reduced to a raised platform measuring about 17.6 metres by 10 metres, standing just half a metre high. Some boulders and fragments of rough walling help define its edges, but no substantial building remains survive above ground. The platform itself is stony and overgrown, offering only subtle hints of the structure that once commanded this position.

The castle’s placement next to a moated site suggests it may have been part of a larger defensive complex, possibly dating to the Anglo-Norman period when such fortifications were common throughout Wicklow. Its proximity to the much older Brusselstown Ring creates an intriguing palimpsest of Irish history, where prehistoric, medieval, and modern landscapes overlap. Though the castle has largely vanished, its memory persists in the townland name and in the careful archaeological records that document these lost landmarks of Ireland’s past.
