The only evidence of its existence comes from historical maps; the 1838 Ordnance Survey six-inch map clearly marks this spot as ‘Site of Castle’, depicting it as a small square area measuring approximately 25 metres by 25 metres.
The castle’s complete disappearance makes it something of a mystery. Without any standing remains or even foundation stones visible at ground level, visitors to the site today would find it impossible to identify where this fortification once stood without the aid of historical documents. The gentle slope would have provided the castle with good visibility across the surrounding countryside, a strategic advantage for any medieval stronghold in this part of Wicklow.
This information comes from the Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow, published by the Stationery Office in Dublin in 1997, with updates from more recent research carried out in 2008. Whilst the physical castle has vanished entirely, its memory persists in the landscape through place names and old maps, reminding us how much of Ireland’s built heritage has been lost to time.
