First documented on the 1839 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, this enigmatic feature stretches approximately 60 metres northwest to southeast and 50 metres northeast to southwest, though time and agriculture have softened its edges into the surrounding level terrain.

Today, visitors to the site will find a grass-covered rectangular area measuring 34 by 33 metres, considerably smaller than the original mapped dimensions. The most distinctive features are the back-filled moats that still define the northwestern and southeastern boundaries; these defensive ditches, roughly 13 metres wide and 0.6 metres deep, offer the clearest evidence of the site’s former purpose. A low scarp marks the southwestern edge whilst a wide field drain runs along the northeastern side, completing the rectangular outline.

The fort’s appearance on early 19th-century maps suggests it held some significance in local memory, though its original construction date and exact purpose remain uncertain. Archaeological surveys conducted by Barry in 1977 helped document what remains of this intriguing site, which was later included in the Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford published in 1996. Whether it served as a medieval defensive structure, an earlier ringfort, or fulfilled some other strategic purpose, the Garrynisk fort site stands as a quiet reminder of Wexford’s layered history, written not in stone but in the subtle contours of the land itself.
